How many wedding invitations should I buy?

The question, "How many wedding invitations should I buy?" you would think would be obvious. You buy as many as you need. But how do you figure that out? You would be surprised how many folks are stumped by this and often don’t order enough, or sometimes order way too many.

Some ideas to keep in mind are: your count is going to be different than your count for your caterer unless you are not inviting any married couples. You need a total count of persons for your caterer, but count your couples as one instead of two when it comes to ordering your wedding invitations, since you only need one per couple. If you have single adults still living at home who are invited, they each need their own invitation.

You do need to keep a couple of other things in mind when ordering your wedding invitations. You will want to order probably an additional 25 when you think you are at your final count because invariably you or someone in you family will remember some other individuals who have been inadvertedly omitted from the master list who probably should have been on there and you may have some mistakes when it comes to addressing them.

If you are having a calligrapher address your wedding invitations, they will insist on some additional envelopes to allow for a few mistakes. If you are doing them yourself, you definitely will need a few extras. You can order extra envelopes for this purpose. But if you have to order additional invitations later because you happened to think of some other individuals you want to invite, it will cost you a lot more to reorder than if you ordered a few extra in the beginning. So just be sure that you have padded your list a bit.
