What Happens to the Ring if the Engagement is Broken Off?
What happens to the ring if the engagement is broken off?
I often walk by “for sale” bulletin boards and see engagement rings for sale. You know there’s a story behind each one. Some of the cards even say things like, “only worn for a day” or “never worn”. Ouch!
Some jewelry stores actually offer an “insurance” or policy that allows you to return the ring incase she says no or changes her mind. I guess these people didn’t take the extra insurance offer.
The break up is already awkward enough, but discussing the fate of the ring is inevitable, scary and nerve wracking.
The questions run through our minds…What if he’s offended I don’t keep it? What if she’s offended I ask for it back? I am still making payments on it and I really need the money, should I ask her for it back?
Although the right thing to do is entirely situational and between he two individuals, there are a couple absolute clear cut etiquette rules.
- If the ring is a family heirloom on the man’s side, the women MUST give it back regardless of the situation.
- If you as the women keep the ring for whatever reason, it’s a big etiquette no no to keep it, then turn around and sell it. Unless that’s specifically discussed and agreed upon with your ex.
- Guys…as expensive as that ring was, don’t use it for the next women you propose to. Believe me, she will find out and you’ll have another broken engagement.
I do hope you enjoyed today’s wedding etiquette. (Well, I should say pre-wedding etiquette).
