Hiring a Musician for Your Wedding - Wedding Etiquette

There’s just something about live music vs canned music, at a wedding.

When you’ve decided to have a live musicians vs “canned” music here are some wedding etiquette tips to remember…

First of all, remember that live musicians are not robots. They too will need breaks to rest, use the toilet and eat.

Secondly, you will also want to provide a safe place for them to put their instrument so it doesn’t get damaged or stolen. Many musicians are very protective of their instruments for good reason too. Not only are the instruments expensive, but in many cases it’s their meal ticket. Without a working instrument, they are without a large portion of their income.  If they are expected to play outside, provide them with protection from the elements (rain, heat, etc.).

Thirdly, always read the contract.

Let me share this story with you. I once heard about this couple who hired a pianist. They assumed he was going to bring a piano with him. You know, one of those portable electric ones you can attach a sound system to. At the same time the pianist assumed the engaged couple read the contract/agreement that indicated they need to provide a real and well tuned piano. Needless to say both parties were surprised when they arrived. The wedding was delayed for about an hour while they quickly set up the canned music and they still had to pay the musician for his time and mileage as per the contract.

I hope this helps you down the road at some point. Have a great day.
