Chinese Wedding Traditions

For the next while, I will be sharing with you some ancient and modern wedding traditions and wedding etiquette from many different countries.

Today we’ll start with Chinese wedding ceremonies.

Ancient Chinese weddings were full of traditions, respect and quite the procedure.
There were the pre-ceremony traditions (“Obtaining the Bride”, “Bridesmaid Games” & Arriving at the Groom’s House”). Then there were the three main Ceremonial Rites which were the actual Ceremony (kept short and simple), the “Nuptial Chamber” & the “Tea Ceremony”. Last but not least, there was of course the Celebrations. The “Wedding Banquet(s)”, The “Day After the Wedding” and the “Three Days After the Wedding”.
These are just the main events. There are many more in between.
For more details on the specifics of each, simply do a search online for “Chinese Wedding Etiquette”.

In this day and age there are still the traditional families who show their heritage by following the ancient ways to the exact. Some choose not to go through such detail before and after the wedding, but still want to show their Chinese roots.

There are all kinds of ways to do this. As the Bride and Groom, you could wear the traditional Chinese wedding clothes or even include your heritage in the décor. Whatever traditions you do stick with, be sure to explain them to your guest who are not as familiar with your culture.

As the guest, remember it’s OK to ask what’s expected of you as a guest.

Until tomorrow, have a great day!
