Choosing the Right Stores for your Gift Registry
In choosing where to set up your wedding gift regestry, check the store’s customer service, return and exchange policies, and accessibility for your guests who live in other parts of the county or world. Some stores, for example, offer only store credit for gifts you return, while other give cash refunds, which may be preferable to you. Other stores have a time limit for returns.
Be aware that some department stores insist on gift receipts for returns, while others will offer you only more recent sale price in the last thirty days for a returned fist. This can be problematic, so be sure to ask the stores about these issues prior to establishing your registry.
Many stores also have computerized gift registries (different from online registries) that allow guests to print out your registry by entering your of your groom’s name into a computer
In-store electronic gift registries as well as sales people will also assist you after your showers and wedding in keeping track of gifts that you may have received.
Be sure to check with the stores periodically to make sure that they are updating your registry as your guests purchase items.
If you want to register somewhere that does not have a gift registry program (such as a small boutique or non-chain store), consult with the store manager to see if you can leave with them a list of items you would like. Who knows? You may inspire them to create a registry!
Be aware, though, that smaller stores may have more restrictions on returns, exchanges, or back-ordered items, since they may not have access to the same quantity of items as do larger stores. They may also have higher prices. Inquire about these and other policies before committing.
It is a major faux pas to include with your wedding invitation a list of the stores where you are registered! Invitees will ask you, friends, or family where you are registered if they choose to purchase gifts in this way.
On the other hand, including the names of stores where you are registered on a shower invitation is acceptable and not inappropriate.
