How to Announce the Engagement
June 25th, 2007 by Elizabeth Blackwell
You probably haven’t thought much about the etiquette of announcing your engagement. Just be aware that this is one of the first steps in the world of wedding etiquette.
Here is a very quick guide to announcing your engagement:
- If you have kids, tell them first - since they will be the most affected. They wil be getting a new parent. Hopefully your children are happy about this development and have seen it coming. If not, take this step slow and be sensitive to their feelings about the engagement.
- If you don’t have kids, tell your parents the good news first. Start with the parents of the bride, followed by the parents of the groom. If either of your parents are divorced, start by telling your mothers first. If your finance hasn’t met your parents, you should first introduce them and let them get to know one another and tell them after the first meeting.
- Tell your close friends and extended family.
- Tell others in your life.
Congratulations on your engagement - and welcome to the world of wedding etiquette. Watch this column for more tips to help navigate through the coming months and steps to take to create the best possible atmosphere to start your new life together as husband and wife.
