How to Renew Your Vows

Renew your vows privately or publicly, whichever is your heart’s desire. This is your chance to have the wedding you’ve always dreamed of, not just to replicate what you had years ago.

Instead of traditional bridesmaids and groomsmen, ask important friends or relatives who are couples to be in your wedding party. Choose close friends who have weathered the years with you, as well as newer friends you have acquired during your years as a couple. In a traditional wedding the bridesmaids and groomsmen reflect the joining of two single people, while in a vow renewal celebration your attendants can be couples significant to your couplehood.

Some etiquette books say that when renewing your vows, you should not wear a veil or throw a bouquet, but if you wish you can wear a long wedding gown (perhaps your original one), and you can register again, too.

If you and your husband choose to walk down an aisle again, walk as a couple or as individuals coming together. You don’t need to be “given away” again.

It is nice to exchange a token to represent your recommitment to each other, such as a necklace or even matching his-and-her watches to symbolize the timelessness of your love.

You don’t have to exchange any material things, tough. The words you share and the symbolic ceremony can be more than enough.

Invite guests to participate in your ceremony via readings, candle lightings, or singing.

If you have children, incorporate them into the ceremony, and remarry as a family unit.

Have your children write their own vows and exchange a gift or token with them.

Have a first dance to your wedding song.
