Marriage Proposal Goes Up In Flames. Literally! - Wedding Etiquette
Normally when a marriage proposal goes up in flames, it means she said no and the entire idea turned out to be a disaster. This story however is completely different.
Lawrence Waterhouse III had it all planned out when he decided to propose to his girlfriend in the gazebo just outside of his home, on Wednesday night. The scene was perfect. He had candles in the trees, candles along the path with dog wood petals and a votive candle chandelier hanging in the gazebo.
Of course she said yes and they immediately left for a trip out west. (What girl could resist such a romantic man?)
Apparently not all the candles were out because the following morning (apx. 7:15am) the fire department received a phone call. When Chief Metz arrived on the scene, the gazebo was completely engulfed in flames.
Metz actually tracked down the romantic couple at the airport and told them about the fire. But since no one was hurt and the fire stayed contained to just the gazebo, Mr. Waterhouse and his fiancé were advised to continue their trip.
What a romantic story and a lesson to all of us. In this case they got real lucky. Moral of the story…make sure all candles are completely out before leaving them unattended.
