The Gum Chewer - Wedding Etiquette

As a kid I never understood why my mom was so “mean” about letting me have bubble gum. One day she said to me “I don’t want you looking like a cow”. It didn’t stop me from chewing gum but from that point on I couldn’t help but observe people chewing gum. She was right, we really do look like cows when we chew bubble gum! I hated it when she was right ;0).

With this in mind, I recently heard of a couple wedding stories that made me realize, this is a great topic for wedding etiquette.

In the first wedding story the bride was so nervous she forgot she had gum in her mouth. As the ceremony proceeded the more nervous she got and the louder the chewing would get. With the microphone right in front of her, it was quite obnoxious. Finally the priest interrupted the ceremony to have her spit it out.

In the second wedding story there were a couple gum incidents. The first incident was when some kids decided to stick their gum on people’s chairs and ruined two Tuxedos. The other incident included a gal that was quite disruptive when she began the cow chewing, loud slobber smacking, mouth wide open chew. She then began popping bubbles. She was completely clueless because it was so automatic and habitual for her.

Some of us chew gum to relieve nerves. Some chew it just for the fun of it. Whatever the reason, please leave the gum at home and refrain from giving children gum before and during the ceremonies.
