The Sensitive Bride & The New Bridal Store Employee
I’m constantly keeping my eyes and ears open for unique wedding etiquette material to share with you. I just never expected to find it in the long line of the grocery store. It’s amazing who you meet and what you can learn about people while standing in line.
Somehow another lady (we’ll call her Anne) and myself started a conversation. It turned out she just completed her first day on the job at a bridal store and apparently needed a shoulder to cry on. She was very young, never been engaged or married and never participated in the preparations of a marriage before. So this was an entirely new experience for her.
One of the first comments she made was “I made a bride cry” and felt horrible about it. She also admitted she didn’t know that brides were so sensitive and emotional. As the story went, she was helping this bride find that perfect dress. Apparently the bride was very stressed out and a little sensitive about her weight, because when Anne said “let me see if I can find you a dress that fits a little better”, the bride broke down in tears. It turns out the bride interpreted that as Anne calling her fat. Anne meant nothing insulting whatsoever and said it in a kind casual way. Anne simply wanted to see if there was a better dress.
In the end they made emmend, but that story made me realize that even the employees of bridal stores have to practice wedding etiquette on a day to day basis. Poor souls.
