Wedding Quilts and Baby Quilts Continued…
Yesterday we talked a little about wedding quilts and baby quilts having symbolism behind them. Well I wanted to share an example of a baby quilt I ran across over at the house of an acquaintance.
In her family room was a beautiful handmade baby quilt hanging on her wall as though it were a tapestry. When I inquired about it (thinking it really was a tapestry), she explained it was a baby quilt her mother had made for her baby. Well by the time she received it, the baby already had another quilt and this one was just so beautiful, she couldn’t stand the thought of it getting spit up and who knows what else on it. She knew it would fade and get ruined the more times she washed it. So she hung it on the wall as a piece of family history.
To look at the quilt you would think it was just a mountain scene with a lake and cabin. But every detail in the quilt was symbolic for something from when she was a child. It was meant as a story for her baby, so he’d always have a piece of his mom with him as he was snuggled in it.
If you looked closely, the mountains had a trail leading up it with a sign that said Larch Valley. This trail was one of her favorite mountain hiking adventure memories. The lake also had a hand stitched sign saying the name of her favorite ice fishing lake she would often go to with her family. To represent her love for wildlife, there were had ducks, geese and a bear. Even bear claw designs all the way around the quilt. And finally, the cabin on the quilt represented her love for log cabins and the desire to have one someday.
