Wedding Quilts & Baby Quilts Telling A History
At weddings there usually seems to be that one person who drops a hint, makes a joke or a comment as to when to couple will have children. There’s no greater hint than when Jenny received a baby quilt at your wedding. Not only did they receive a baby quilt but a wedding quilt too.
Wedding quilts aren’t as common as they used to be. Each wedding quilt holds its own story of either that individual or the family. Some people would make it out of fabric that has been in the family for generations. The fabric could have come from other family quilts, clothes, etc. Some people make it from all new fabric but the pictures tell a history of the family or that individual. There’s usually some kind of symbolism in the quilt somewhere.
In this particular case it was the baby quilt that told the story of the bride (the future mom). The quilt maker (the mother of the bride) had quilted pictures with various symbolism behind each one, such as the brides favorite animals, places and hobbies as a kid.
Now there’s just one problem publicly giving a bride a baby quilt. Mom forgot how people may interpret it. Let’s just say the room got silent. The guests thought the baby quilt was announcing something. Whoops. The awkward silence made the bride and her mom realize the interpretations and had to quickly explain that she wasn’t expecting, and that it was simply a hint saying “ok, gamma’s ready for a grand baby now that her daughter is married”. Thankfully everyone knew enough wedding etiquette to remain silent and not make any rude remarks.
