Wedding Toast Etiquette Nightmare - The Disapproving Mother In-Law

Some newlyweds choose to have open toasts for anyone to comment. Others plan a more “controlled” toast in order to avoid embarrassment and disaster. After reading some of these true wedding toast etiquette nightmares, you may choose the “controlled” option too.

Have you ever been to a wedding dinner where someone making a “toast” obviously disapproved of the future spouse by insulting them or their family?

In this particular case I found online, the mother of the bride actually made a speech that went something along the lines of, “While he was clearly not who we would have chosen for our daughter, what can you do? You work hard and teach your children, but they do what they want to anyway.”

Talk about awkward. I feel bad for that groom. If his mother in-law is like that now, insulting him in front of everyone, including his own family….what is she going to be like as time goes on? As insulting as that is to the groom, she’s really doing damage to herself. People will more than likely loose respect for her and see her as a wench (to put it nicely). Nevertheless, it’s best to avoid this by pre-choosing supportive people to give toast speeches. Just so all the guests are on the same page and know it’s not an open cattle-call for toasts, you may want to have your emcee kindly announce this. The emcee can even use the excuse “due to time constraints”. That way people aren’t offended.
