I came across a question today about wedding etiquette. This one concerns canceling a wedding - and what to do with the bridesmaid’s dress. If this happens, who should cover the cost on the bridesmaid dress: the bridesmaid or the bride?

Unfortunately, the bridesmaids are still responsible for the cost of the dress. This is not a pleasant reality for the bride or the bridesmaid. One has a broken heart and a lot of expenses, and the other is stuck with a dress she didn’t want. Actually the bride is probably out a lot more than a broken heart.

Try to keep some perspective and be a good friend during this time. The way you handle this experience can hurt or strengthen your friendship.

One site suggested to sell the dress on eBay or sell it at a consignment shop. There are special consignment shops just for weddings. Then there’s always Craigslist.org - a free online classifieds site.

As a final thought, think of this: the bride may also be hawking her dress. And she’ll probably be out a lot more than you are. The proper thing to do is to be gracious about the situation.
