White or Ivory Wedding Dress

Traditionally a bride would wear a white wedding dress if it was her first marriage and an ivory dress for any marriages thereafter. Many people would actually consider it inappropriate to wear a white wedding dress if this is the brides second time around? Or perhaps it’s her third, fourth or fifth time around.

Well, the rules have changed a bit over time. The fact is, there are no “rules”, only pride. New traditions are created every day and it’s become more acceptable to wear white even if it’s not the brides first marriage.

The whole point behind white vs ivory was symbolism. White typically meant “pure” and “never been touched” and ivory symbolized the opposite.

Now you even could look at wearing a white dress (on the second, third marriage, etc.) as symbolizing a fresh new beginning and new life with a clean slate.

For the more traditional bride, you can find ivory dresses that are just as beautiful as white dresses. It doesn’t even have to be a darker ivory. Some are so faint it practically looks white.

As a guest, family or friend, if you have reservations about the choice of wedding dress, it would be poor wedding etiquette to make any rude or snide remarks. It’s best to keep it to yourself. Besides, you’ll only make yourself look like an unpleasant person and create a negative atmosphere.

Try not to get too caught up in the white vs ivory issue, because the most important things are the words and promises the happy couple makes to one another.
